Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
How can a coach use punishment to control aggression?
Model answer
A coach can drop, fine or substitute a player who acts aggressively. Consistent punishment shows that aggression has negative consequences.
- 2
How can positive reinforcement reduce aggression?
Model answer
Praise and reward for calm, assertive play make that behaviour more likely to be repeated. The player learns that non-aggressive play is valued.
- 3
How do positive role models help to control aggression?
Model answer
Players who see respected performers staying calm under provocation are likely to copy that behaviour. Coaches can highlight such role models in team talks.
- 4
How can removing a player from a situation reduce aggression?
Model answer
A substitution, or a change of position away from a provoking opponent, removes the trigger. The player then has time to calm down before returning.
- 5
How can cognitive techniques help a player control aggression?
Model answer
Imagery, mental rehearsal and positive self-talk keep a player calm and focused on the task. A count to ten before reacting also gives time to think.
- 6
How can somatic techniques help a player control aggression?
Model answer
Controlled breathing and progressive muscle relaxation can lower physiological arousal. A calmer body makes an aggressive reaction less likely.
