Incentive value and probability of success
- 3 things to know
- Paper 2
Overview
Probability of success and incentive value, worked comparisons of races, how Nach and Naf performers respond, and how a coach alters the situation.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What are the two situational factors in Atkinson's model?
What is the probability of success?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What are the two situational factors in Atkinson's model?
Model answer
The two situational factors are the probability of success and the incentive value of success.
- 2
What is the probability of success?
Model answer
The probability of success is the likelihood of succeeding at a task. The probability depends on the difficulty of the task and the strength of the opposition.
- 3
What is incentive value?
Model answer
Incentive value is the satisfaction or pride a performer would gain from succeeding. Incentive value is high when success is hard to achieve.
- 4
How are incentive value and probability of success related?
Model answer
Incentive value and probability of success are inversely related. A win over a weak opponent is likely but brings little pride. A win over a strong opponent is unlikely but highly rewarding.
- 5
Taking incentive value as 1 minus the probability of success, compare a local race a runner rates at 0.9 probability of winning with a county race rated at 0.4.
Model answer
The county race has the higher incentive value, by 0.5. The county race gives 1 − 0.4 = 0.6 and the local race gives 1 − 0.9 = 0.1.
- 6
Taking incentive value as 1 minus the probability of success, why does a task with a 0.5 probability of success appeal most to a high-Nach performer?
Model answer
The product of probability of success and incentive value is greatest at 0.5, where 0.5 × 0.5 = 0.25. An easier task gives less, for example 0.8 × 0.2 = 0.16.
