The Neuromuscular System
Muscle spindles, Golgi tendon organs and PNF
- 3 things to know
- Paper 1
Overview
Proprioceptors, muscle spindles and the stretch reflex, Golgi tendon organs and autogenic inhibition, how PNF works, and reciprocal inhibition.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What are proprioceptors?
Where are muscle spindles found, and what do they detect?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What are proprioceptors?
Model answer
Proprioceptors are sensory receptors that detect changes in muscle length, muscle tension and joint position.
- 2
Where are muscle spindles found, and what do they detect?
Model answer
Muscle spindles lie between the fibres in the belly of a muscle. Muscle spindles detect how far and how fast a muscle is being stretched.
- 3
Describe the stretch reflex.
Model answer
Muscle spindles detect a rapid or excessive stretch and send impulses to the spinal cord. The muscle is made to contract, which prevents overstretching.
- 4
Where are Golgi tendon organs found, and what do they detect?
Model answer
Golgi tendon organs lie where the muscle joins the tendon. Golgi tendon organs detect the level of tension in a muscle.
- 5
What is autogenic inhibition?
Model answer
Autogenic inhibition is the relaxation of a muscle when Golgi tendon organs detect high tension. The Golgi tendon organs override the stretch reflex, allowing further stretch.
- 6
What does PNF stand for?
Model answer
PNF stands for proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in The Neuromuscular System, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
