- Paper 2
Overview
Proprioceptive and strength training, hyperbaric chambers, cryotherapy and hydrotherapy, and how each speeds rehabilitation.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is proprioceptive training, and when is it used?
Why is proprioceptive training important after an ankle sprain?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define rehabilitation.
Model answer
Rehabilitation is the process of restoring an injured performer to full function and fitness. Rehabilitation aims to return the performer to sport safely and quickly.
- 2
What is proprioceptive training, and when is it used?
Model answer
Proprioceptive training uses balance exercises, such as wobble boards and single-leg stands, to retrain awareness of joint position. Proprioceptive training is used after ligament injuries such as ankle sprains.
- 3
Why is proprioceptive training important after an ankle sprain?
Model answer
Ligament damage also damages proprioceptors, so the brain receives poorer information about joint position. Balance training restores quick corrective reactions and reduces the risk of re-injury.
- 4
How does strength training help rehabilitation?
Model answer
Strength training rebuilds muscle lost through inactivity and strengthens the muscles supporting the injured joint. A stronger joint is more stable and less likely to be injured again.
- 5
How might strength training be progressed after knee surgery?
Model answer
Rehabilitation might begin with isometric contractions and resistance bands, then move to body weight and free weights. Loads increase gradually as the tissue heals.
- 6
What is a hyperbaric chamber?
Model answer
A hyperbaric chamber is a sealed chamber in which a performer breathes pure oxygen at raised pressure. The pressure is typically about two to three times normal atmospheric pressure.
