Classifying skills on the six continua
- 3 things to know
- Paper 1
Overview
The open–closed, discrete–serial–continuous, gross–fine, self-paced–externally paced, organisation and simple–complex continua, with justified placements of sporting skills.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What does the open–closed continuum classify?
Define an open skill and give a sporting example.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What does the open–closed continuum classify?
Model answer
The open–closed continuum classifies a skill by how much the environment affects it. The more the skill must adapt to changing surroundings, the more open it is.
- 2
Define an open skill and give a sporting example.
Model answer
An open skill is strongly affected by a changing, unpredictable environment and must be constantly adapted. A netball pass made under pressure from defenders is open.
- 3
Why is a basketball free throw placed towards the closed end of the continuum?
Model answer
A free throw is taken in a stable and predictable environment. The shooter repeats the same learned movement each time, unaffected by opponents.
- 4
What does the discrete–serial–continuous continuum measure?
Model answer
The continuity continuum measures how clearly a skill's beginning and end can be identified. A discrete skill has a clear start and finish, while a continuous one has none.
- 5
Classify the triple jump on the continuity continuum and justify the placement.
Model answer
The triple jump is a serial skill. The event links several discrete elements in a set order: the run-up, hop, step and jump.
- 6
Why is cycling classed as a continuous skill?
Model answer
Cycling has no obvious beginning or end to its movement pattern. The end of one pedal stroke is the start of the next.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Skill, Transfer and Practice, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
