Acute and chronic sports injuries
- 3 things to know
- Paper 2
Overview
Acute and chronic injuries, open and closed fractures, dislocations, strains and sprains, Achilles tendonitis, stress fractures and tennis elbow.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is a fracture, how do open and closed fractures differ, and how can fractures happen in sport?
Define an acute injury.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define an acute injury.
Model answer
An acute injury occurs suddenly, usually from a single impact, twist or excessive force. Pain and swelling appear immediately.
- 2
Define a chronic injury.
Model answer
A chronic injury develops gradually through overuse and repeated stress on the same tissue. Symptoms build up over weeks or months.
- 3
What is a fracture, and how do open and closed fractures differ?
Model answer
A fracture is a crack or break in a bone. A closed fracture leaves the skin intact, whereas an open fracture breaks through the skin.
- 4
Give a sporting example of how a fracture could occur.
Model answer
A footballer's lower leg can be fractured by a heavy impact in a mistimed tackle. A fall onto an outstretched hand can also fracture the wrist.
- 5
Define a dislocation.
Model answer
A dislocation occurs when the articulating bones of a joint are forced out of their normal position. The ligaments and joint capsule are often damaged as well.
- 6
Why is the shoulder frequently dislocated in contact sports such as rugby?
Model answer
The shoulder is a ball and socket joint with a shallow socket. The joint allows a large range of movement but has little bony stability.
