Manual and mechanical guidance
- 3 things to know
- Paper 1
Overview

What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Define mechanical guidance.
Why is manual guidance useful for a beginner?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define manual guidance.
Model answer
Manual guidance is physical support from a coach who moves or holds the learner's body through the skill. A coach guiding a golfer's arms through the swing is an example.
- 2
Define mechanical guidance.
Model answer
Mechanical guidance uses equipment to support or shape the learner's movement. A float in swimming and a harness in trampolining are examples.
- 3
Why is manual guidance useful for a beginner?
Model answer
Manual guidance lets the learner feel the correct movement pattern early on. The learner gains confidence and an initial kinaesthetic sense of the skill.
- 4
How does mechanical guidance improve safety when a gymnast learns a somersault?
Model answer
A harness or spotting belt supports the gymnast if the rotation goes wrong. Fear is reduced, so the gymnast is willing to attempt the skill.
- 5
What is the main risk of relying on manual or mechanical guidance?
Model answer
The learner can become dependent on the support. The guided movement feels different from the real one, so the kinaesthetic sense developed may be incorrect.
- 6
Why might manual guidance be unsuitable for some learners?
Model answer
Close physical contact can make some learners uncomfortable. The coach must explain any contact and gain the learner's agreement first.
