Schmidt's schema theory
- 3 things to know
- Paper 1
Overview
Schemas, the recall and recognition schemas, initial conditions, response specifications, sensory consequences and response outcomes, variable practice, feedback and transfer.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is a schema?
Why did Schmidt propose schema theory?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a schema?
Model answer
A schema is a generalised set of rules for a movement, stored in long-term memory. A schema can be adapted to suit different situations.
- 2
Why did Schmidt propose schema theory?
Model answer
A separate motor programme for every possible movement would need an impossibly large memory. Schmidt argued that performers adapt generalised schemas to new situations instead.
- 3
What is the recall schema?
Model answer
The recall schema initiates the movement. The recall schema is formed from the initial conditions and the response specifications.
- 4
What is the recognition schema?
Model answer
The recognition schema controls and evaluates the movement during and after it. The recognition schema draws on the sensory consequences and the response outcomes.
- 5
Define initial conditions in schema theory.
Model answer
Initial conditions are information about the environment and the performer's position before the movement. A basketball player notes the distance to the basket and where the defenders are.
- 6
Define response specifications in schema theory.
Model answer
Response specifications are the decisions about what the movement needs to do. A passer decides how far and how hard to throw the ball.

Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Information Processing and Memory, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
