- 3 things to know
- Paper 2
Overview
Protein for repair and strength athletes, vitamins C, D, B-12 and the B-complex, and sodium, iron and calcium for performers.
What you need to know

Why might a weightlifter need more protein than a sedentary person?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is the main exercise-related function of protein?
Model answer
Protein supplies the amino acids needed to grow and repair muscle tissue. Protein is used as a fuel only when carbohydrate and fat stores are very low.
- 2
Why might a weightlifter need more protein than a sedentary person?
Model answer
Heavy resistance training causes micro-tears in muscle fibres. Extra protein supplies the amino acids needed for repair and hypertrophy.
- 3
Name some good dietary sources of protein.
Model answer
Good animal sources include lean meat, fish, eggs and dairy foods. Pulses, nuts and soya are useful plant sources.
- 4
What problems can an excessive protein intake cause?
Model answer
Excess protein is not stored as extra muscle and may be converted to fat or used for energy. A very high intake also places extra strain on the kidneys.
- 5
Outline the role of vitamin C.
Model answer
Vitamin C is an antioxidant that helps protect cells from damage. Vitamin C is also needed to form collagen and helps the body absorb iron.
- 6
How might a lack of vitamin C affect an injured performer?
Model answer
Vitamin C is needed to make collagen, the protein in tendons, ligaments and scar tissue. A deficiency would slow the healing of damaged tissue.
