Oxygen deficit and EPOC
- 3 things to know
- Paper 1
Overview
Oxygen deficit, oxygen consumption in submaximal and maximal exercise, MAOD, the fast and slow components of EPOC, lactic acid removal and recovery in a basketball match.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is oxygen deficit?
Why does an oxygen deficit occur at the start of exercise?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is oxygen deficit?
Model answer
Oxygen deficit is the shortfall in oxygen at the start of exercise. The deficit is the oxygen needed for a fully aerobic effort minus the oxygen actually consumed.
- 2
Why does an oxygen deficit occur at the start of exercise?
Model answer
The heart and lungs take time to raise oxygen delivery to the working muscles. Anaerobic systems supply the energy until the oxygen supply catches up.
- 3
Describe oxygen consumption during submaximal exercise.
Model answer
Oxygen consumption rises at the start, leaving a small oxygen deficit. Oxygen consumption then levels off at a steady state, where supply meets demand.
- 4
Describe oxygen consumption during maximal exercise.
Model answer
Oxygen consumption rises but never meets demand. The oxygen deficit is large, and no steady state is reached.
- 5
What is the maximal accumulated oxygen deficit (MAOD)?
Model answer
MAOD is the largest oxygen deficit a performer can build up in a maximal effort. MAOD indicates a performer's anaerobic capacity.
- 6
What is EPOC?
Model answer
EPOC, excess post-exercise oxygen consumption, is the volume of oxygen consumed during recovery above resting levels.
