Attribution Theory
Attribution retraining and overcoming helplessness
- 3 things to know
- Paper 2
Overview
Attribution retraining for failure and success, short-term goals, past successes, praise, modified tasks and self-efficacy.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
How should a coach retrain a performer's attributions for failure?
How should a coach retrain a performer's attributions for success?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is attribution retraining?
Model answer
Attribution retraining is changing the reasons a performer gives for success and failure. The aim is to replace negative attributions with ones that protect motivation.
- 2
How should a coach retrain a performer's attributions for failure?
Model answer
The coach should steer the performer to blame failure on unstable, controllable causes such as effort or tactics. Failure then seems changeable.
- 3
How should a coach retrain a performer's attributions for success?
Model answer
The coach should link success to internal, stable causes such as ability and skill. The performer then expects the success to continue.
- 4
A netballer blames her missed shots on having no talent. What might her coach say instead?
Model answer
The coach might say the misses came from a flaw in technique or a lapse in concentration. Technique and concentration can both be improved with practice.
- 5
Why does attribution retraining reduce learned helplessness?
Model answer
Attribution retraining shows the performer that failure has causes they can change. The performer regains a sense of control and is willing to try again.
- 6
How can short-term goals help a performer avoid learned helplessness?
Model answer
Short-term, achievable goals give the performer regular experiences of success. Each success weakens the belief that failure is inevitable.
