Gas exchange, diffusion and partial pressure
- 3 things to know
- Paper 1
Overview
Diffusion, partial pressure and diffusion gradients, gas exchange at the alveoli and at the muscles, typical partial pressures, alveolar features and the effect of training.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Define diffusion as it applies to gas exchange.
What is partial pressure?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define diffusion as it applies to gas exchange.
Model answer
Diffusion is the movement of gas molecules from an area of high partial pressure to an area of low partial pressure.
- 2
What is partial pressure?
Model answer
Partial pressure is the pressure exerted by one gas within a mixture of gases.
- 3
What is a diffusion gradient?
Model answer
A diffusion gradient is the difference in partial pressure of a gas between two areas. The steeper the gradient, the faster the gas diffuses.
- 4
Explain how oxygen moves from the alveoli into the blood.
Model answer
The partial pressure of oxygen in the alveoli is higher than in the capillary blood arriving at the lungs. Oxygen diffuses down this gradient into the blood.
- 5
Give typical partial pressures of oxygen in the alveoli and in blood arriving at the lungs.
Model answer
Alveolar air has a partial pressure of oxygen of about 100 mmHg. Deoxygenated blood arriving at the lungs has about 40 mmHg.
- 6
What is the oxygen diffusion gradient between alveolar air at 100 mmHg and capillary blood at 40 mmHg?
Model answer
The diffusion gradient is 60 mmHg. The gradient = 100 mmHg − 40 mmHg = 60 mmHg.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in The Respiratory System, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
