Training methods for fitness and health
- 3 things to know
- Paper 2
Overview
Interval training and HIIT, continuous and fartlek training, circuit training, weight training and one-repetition maximum with a worked load, and PNF stretching.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is interval training?
What is HIIT, and which component of fitness does it develop?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is interval training?
Model answer
Interval training alternates periods of work with periods of rest or light recovery. The intensity, duration, recovery and number of repetitions can all be varied.
- 2
What is HIIT, and which component of fitness does it develop?
Model answer
HIIT is high-intensity interval training, with short bursts of near-maximal work separated by brief recoveries. HIIT mainly develops anaerobic power.
- 3
Why would a coach give a sprinter long recoveries between short, maximal intervals?
Model answer
A long recovery relative to the work allows phosphocreatine to be largely restored between efforts. Each repetition can then be performed at near-maximal intensity.
- 4
Suggest a HIIT session suitable for a hockey player.
Model answer
A suitable session is ten 20-second sprints with 40 seconds of walking recovery between them. The repeated efforts mirror the stop-start demands of a match.
- 5
What is continuous training, and what does it develop?
Model answer
Continuous training is steady, rhythmic exercise without rest, lasting at least about 20 minutes. Continuous training develops aerobic power.
- 6
At what intensity is continuous training usually performed?
Model answer
Continuous training is usually performed at about 60 to 80% of maximum heart rate. The intensity keeps the performer working aerobically.

Every question in Preparation and Training Methods, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
