Knowledge of performance vs Knowledge of results
Knowledge of performance: information about movement quality and technique. Knowledge of results: information about the outcome a movement achieved.
Intrinsic feedback vs Extrinsic feedback
Intrinsic feedback: information sensed from within through proprioceptors. Extrinsic feedback: information from an outside source such as a coach.
Positive feedback vs Negative feedback
Positive feedback: information praising what was done correctly. Negative feedback: information identifying errors and how to correct them.
Questions from this topic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is guidance in skill learning?
Model answer
Guidance is information given to a learner to help them acquire or improve a skill. A coach can give it by showing, telling, or physically supporting the movement.
- 2
Define visual guidance.
Model answer
Visual guidance shows the learner what the skill looks like. Demonstrations, videos, diagrams and marked targets all provide visual guidance.
- 3
Why is visual guidance especially useful in the cognitive stage?
Model answer
A beginner needs a clear mental picture of the correct movement. A demonstration conveys the whole skill quickly and simply.
- 4
What are the disadvantages of visual guidance?
Model answer
An inaccurate demonstration may lead the learner to copy faults. A complex skill shown in one go can overload the learner with information.
- 5
How can a demonstration be made more effective?
Model answer
The demonstration should be accurate, repeated and focused on one or two key points. Slow motion and a clear view of the key point help the learner see the detail.
- 6
Define verbal guidance.
Model answer
Verbal guidance is spoken instruction or explanation from a coach. Teaching points, cue words and tactical explanations are all forms of verbal guidance.
