- Paper 1
Overview

What is meant by transfer of learning?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is meant by transfer of learning?
Model answer
Transfer is the influence that learning or performing one skill has on another skill. The influence can help, hinder or have no effect.
- 2
Define positive transfer.
Model answer
Positive transfer occurs when one skill helps the learning or performance of another. Skills with similar movement patterns or decisions are most likely to transfer positively.
- 3
Give a sporting example of positive transfer.
Model answer
An overarm throw in cricket helps a learner develop the javelin throw. The two skills share a similar arm action and release.
- 4
Define negative transfer.
Model answer
Negative transfer occurs when one skill hinders the learning or performance of another. A common cause is a similar stimulus that needs a different response.
- 5
Why might a tennis player find badminton frustrating at first?
Model answer
Tennis uses a firm wrist, while badminton needs a flexible, whipping wrist action. The similar situation calls for a different response, which causes negative transfer.
- 6
What is zero transfer?
Model answer
Zero transfer occurs when one skill has no influence on the learning of another. The two skills share no common elements, such as swimming and a netball chest pass.
