The Musculo-Skeletal System and Movement Analysis
Joint types, articulating bones and muscle pairs
- 3 things to know
- Paper 1
Overview
Ball and socket and hinge joints and their articulating bones, agonists and antagonists at the elbow, knee, ankle, hip and shoulder, the hamstrings and the quadriceps.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What type of joint is the hip, and which bones articulate there?
What type of joint is the elbow, and which bones articulate there?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What type of joint is the shoulder, and which bones articulate there?
Model answer
The shoulder is a ball and socket joint. The humerus articulates with the scapula.
- 2
What type of joint is the hip, and which bones articulate there?
Model answer
The hip is a ball and socket joint. The femur articulates with the pelvis.
- 3
What type of joint is the elbow, and which bones articulate there?
Model answer
The elbow is a hinge joint. The humerus articulates with the radius and ulna.
- 4
What type of joint is the knee, and which bones articulate there?
Model answer
The knee is a hinge joint. The femur articulates with the tibia.
- 5
What type of joint is the ankle, and which bones articulate there?
Model answer
The ankle is a hinge joint. The talus articulates with the tibia and fibula.
- 6
Why can the shoulder move in all three planes when the knee cannot?
Model answer
A ball and socket joint allows movement about all three axes. A hinge joint moves only in the sagittal plane, so the knee can only flex and extend.
