Lactate accumulation, the lactate threshold and OBLA
- 3 things to know
- Paper 1
Overview
Lactate accumulation, the lactate threshold and OBLA, their links to VO₂ max, fibre type and lactate removal, lactate producing capacity and training.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What happens to lactic acid in the muscle?
Define the lactate threshold.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Why does lactate accumulate during high-intensity exercise?
Model answer
The oxygen supply cannot meet demand, so pyruvic acid is converted to lactic acid. Lactic acid is produced faster than it can be removed.
- 2
What happens to lactic acid in the muscle?
Model answer
Lactic acid quickly breaks down into lactate and hydrogen ions. The hydrogen ions lower pH, which inhibits enzyme activity and causes fatigue.
- 3
Define the lactate threshold.
Model answer
The lactate threshold is the point at which lactate starts to accumulate in the blood above resting levels.
- 4
What is OBLA?
Model answer
OBLA, the onset of blood lactate accumulation, is the point at which blood lactate reaches about 4 mmol/L.
- 5
How is OBLA linked to VO₂ max?
Model answer
OBLA is often expressed as a percentage of VO₂ max. The higher the percentage, the harder a performer can work before fatigue sets in.
- 6
Why does a trained marathon runner reach OBLA at a higher running speed than an untrained runner?
Model answer
Endurance training improves oxygen delivery and lactate removal. The trained runner stays aerobic at higher intensities, so lactate builds up later.
