SMARTER goal setting
- 3 things to know
- Paper 2
Overview
Specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, time-bound, evaluate and re-do goals, applied to netball, rugby, a 1500 m runner and free throws with worked figures.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why should a goal be specific?
Why should a goal be measurable?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What does SMARTER stand for?
Model answer
SMARTER stands for specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, time-bound, evaluate and re-do.
- 2
Why should a goal be specific?
Model answer
A specific goal states exactly what the performer must achieve, so effort is clearly directed. A precise aim, such as a faster 5 km time, works better than simply getting fitter.
- 3
Why should a goal be measurable?
Model answer
A measurable goal can be quantified, so progress can be checked objectively. A shot putter can compare each throw in metres against the target distance.
- 4
What does achievable mean in SMARTER?
Model answer
An achievable goal is within the performer's reach with effort. The goal should challenge the performer without being impossible.
- 5
How does realistic differ from achievable in SMARTER?
Model answer
A realistic goal fits the performer's circumstances and resources, such as training time, facilities, money and fitness. A goal can be achievable in theory but unrealistic in practice.
- 6
Why should a goal be time-bound?
Model answer
A deadline gives urgency and helps the performer plan training. The deadline also marks when progress should be assessed.
