What is a mesocycle?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is periodisation?
Model answer
Periodisation is dividing a training year into periods, each with a specific aim. The plan ensures the performer peaks for the most important competitions.
- 2
What is a macrocycle?
Model answer
A macrocycle is the longest training cycle, usually a year or a season, built around a long-term goal. An Olympic athlete may plan a four-year macrocycle.
- 3
What is a mesocycle?
Model answer
A mesocycle is a block of training within a macrocycle, usually lasting several weeks. Each mesocycle has a particular focus, such as building aerobic endurance.
- 4
Define a microcycle.
Model answer
A microcycle is a short cycle, often one week, made up of individual training sessions. The microcycle is repeated through a mesocycle with progressive changes.
- 5
What happens during the preparation period?
Model answer
The preparation period is the pre-season, when general fitness is built first and then sport-specific fitness. Training volume is high early on, with intensity rising towards competition.
- 6
What is the aim of the competition period?
Model answer
The competition period maintains fitness and refines skill while the performer competes. The volume of training falls, while quality and intensity stay high.
