Memory and the working memory model
- 3 things to know
- Paper 1
Overview
Short-term and long-term memory, the working memory model with its central executive, phonological loop, visuospatial sketchpad and episodic buffer, chunking and chaining.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Describe the capacity and duration of short-term memory.
Describe the capacity and duration of long-term memory.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What role does memory play in decision making?
Model answer
The performer compares incoming information with stored experiences to choose a response. Memory also holds the motor programmes used to carry the response out.
- 2
Describe the capacity and duration of short-term memory.
Model answer
Short-term memory holds a limited amount, about seven items give or take two. Information lasts up to about 30 seconds unless it is rehearsed.
- 3
Describe the capacity and duration of long-term memory.
Model answer
Long-term memory has an almost unlimited capacity. Information, including well-learned motor programmes, can be stored for a lifetime.
- 4
How does information pass from short-term to long-term memory?
Model answer
Information is rehearsed and practised until it is encoded into long-term memory. Repeated practice of a skill stores its motor programme permanently.
- 5
Who proposed the working memory model, and what did it replace?
Model answer
Baddeley and Hitch proposed the working memory model in 1974. The model replaced the idea of short-term memory as a single, simple store.
- 6
What is the role of the central executive?
Model answer
The central executive controls attention and directs information to the other components. The central executive has a limited capacity and links to long-term memory.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Information Processing and Memory, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
