- 3 things to know
- Paper 2
Overview
Compression garments, massage and foam rollers, ice baths and whole-body cryotherapy, sleep, and carbohydrate and protein for recovery.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
When might a performer wear compression garments?
How does sports massage aid recovery?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
How do compression garments aid recovery?
Model answer
Compression garments squeeze the limbs and aid venous return. Blood flow improves, so lactate and swelling are cleared more quickly.
- 2
When might a performer wear compression garments?
Model answer
Compression garments may be worn during exercise, after training or when travelling. A long flight after competition is a typical use, reducing swelling in the legs.
- 3
How does sports massage aid recovery?
Model answer
Massage increases blood flow to the muscles, helping to remove waste products. Massage also relieves muscle tension and may reduce DOMS.
- 4
What is a foam roller used for?
Model answer
A foam roller lets a performer massage their own muscles by rolling body weight over it. The pressure eases tension in muscles and fascia and increases blood flow.
- 5
What is an ice bath, and how long does a typical session last?
Model answer
An ice bath is immersion of the legs or body in cold water after exercise. A session usually lasts about 5 to 15 minutes in water of about 10 to 15 °C.
- 6
Explain how an ice bath aids recovery.
Model answer
Cold water causes vasoconstriction, which reduces swelling and limits damage to muscle tissue. Vasodilation after the bath flushes oxygenated blood through the muscles and removes waste products.
