Vectors: displacement, velocity, acceleration and momentum
- 3 things to know
- Paper 2
Overview
Vector quantities, displacement, velocity and acceleration with worked examples, momentum in rugby, and velocity–time graphs.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is displacement?
A cross-country runner follows a winding 3 km course that finishes 1 km due east of the start. State the distance travelled and the displacement.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a vector quantity?
Model answer
A vector quantity has both magnitude and direction. Vectors are often shown as arrows, with the length representing magnitude.
- 2
What is displacement?
Model answer
Displacement is the shortest straight-line distance from start to finish, in a stated direction. Displacement is measured in metres.
- 3
A cross-country runner follows a winding 3 km course that finishes 1 km due east of the start. State the distance travelled and the displacement.
Model answer
The distance travelled is 3 km. The displacement is 1 km east.
- 4
What is velocity, and how is it calculated?
Model answer
Velocity is the rate of change of displacement. Velocity = displacement ÷ time, measured in metres per second (m s⁻¹).
- 5
How do speed and velocity differ?
Model answer
Speed is a scalar with magnitude only. Velocity is a vector that also states the direction of motion.
- 6
A swimmer completes a 100 m race in a 50 m pool in 50 s, finishing at the starting wall. State the average speed and the average velocity.
Model answer
The average speed is 2.0 m s⁻¹. The average velocity is zero, because the displacement is zero.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Linear and Angular Motion, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
