Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is violence in sport?
Model answer
Violence in sport is physical force used with intent to harm, outside the rules of the game. Punching an opponent and fighting between fans are examples.
- 2
Why might a performer become violent during a match?
Model answer
Frustration at losing, poor officiating or provocation can trigger violence. High arousal and the physical nature of contact sports also contribute.
- 3
How can the importance of a match cause performer violence?
Model answer
High stakes, such as a cup final or a relegation battle, increase pressure and arousal. Performers may lose control in pursuit of the win.
- 4
How can the media contribute to violence in sport?
Model answer
Media hype can build up rivalries and portray matches as battles. Violent incidents are replayed repeatedly, which can make them seem acceptable.
- 5
How can coaches or teammates encourage performer violence?
Model answer
Coaches may instruct players to intimidate opponents or reward overly physical play. Pressure to conform within a team can push players into violent acts.
- 6
Why might spectators become violent?
Model answer
Excess alcohol, local or national rivalry and frustration at results can trigger spectator violence. Anonymity within a large crowd reduces individuals' sense of responsibility.
