Questions from this topic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is an outcome goal?
Model answer
An outcome goal is set on the end result, such as winning a match or a medal. The goal is met or missed partly because of how opponents perform.
- 2
What is a performance goal?
Model answer
A performance goal is judged against the performer's own previous standards rather than against others. A swimmer aiming to beat a personal best of 58.5 seconds sets a performance goal.
- 3
What is a process goal?
Model answer
A process goal focuses on the technique or actions needed to perform well. A basketball player aiming to keep the shooting elbow tucked in sets a process goal.
- 4
Give two benefits of outcome goals.
Model answer
Outcome goals can be highly motivating and give a clear target, such as a title. A performer who achieves an outcome goal gains confidence and self-esteem.
- 5
Give two drawbacks of outcome goals.
Model answer
The result depends partly on opponents and officials, which the performer cannot control. Outcome goals can raise anxiety, and a defeat lowers motivation even after a good performance.
- 6
Give two benefits of performance goals.
Model answer
Performance goals are within the performer's control, so they reduce anxiety. Progress can be measured, which keeps motivation high even when the team loses.
