Collecting and analysing sports data
- 3 things to know
- Paper 2
Overview
Sports analytics, quantitative, qualitative, objective and subjective data, video analysis, metabolic carts, GPS and motion tracking, and data integrity.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
How can an analyst make subjective match data more trustworthy, and why must a GPS unit sit in the same position every match?
What is sports analytics?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is sports analytics?
Model answer
Sports analytics is the collection and analysis of data to improve performance and decision making in sport.
- 2
A hockey analyst records each player's distance covered and number of sprints. What type of data is this?
Model answer
Distance and sprint counts are quantitative and objective data. The data is numerical and measured by equipment rather than judged.
- 3
Why should an analyst combine quantitative match data with qualitative feedback?
Model answer
Numbers show what happened but not why it happened. A player's account of fatigue or tactics gives the numbers context.
- 4
How can an analyst make subjective match data more trustworthy?
Model answer
Several trained analysts can code the same footage using clear definitions for each action. The analysts' results can then be compared for agreement.
- 5
Why should a GPS unit be worn in the same position in every match?
Model answer
A consistent position keeps the measurements reliable from match to match. A moved unit could change the readings and hide real changes in workload.
- 6
Why might GPS data be inaccurate in an indoor arena or a stadium with a closed roof?
Model answer
GPS needs a clear signal from satellites, which roofs and buildings can block. The recorded positions and speeds may then be wrong.
