Whiting's information processing model
- 3 things to know
- Paper 1
Overview
The information processing model, the environment and display, sensory organs, perceptual, translatory and effector mechanisms, output and feedback data, applied to a goalkeeper and a rugby player.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Apply Whiting's model to a rugby player deciding whether to pass or run.
What is information processing?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is information processing?
Model answer
Information processing is how a performer takes in information, makes a decision and produces a response.
- 2
Name the four stages of the general information processing model.
Model answer
The four stages are input, decision making, output and feedback.
- 3
What is meant by output in the information processing model?
Model answer
Output is the movement the performer produces. Nerve impulses are sent to the muscles to carry out the chosen response.
- 4
How does feedback link back to input?
Model answer
Feedback on the response becomes new input for the next decision. The performer uses the information to adjust or confirm the action.
- 5
What does the environment mean in Whiting's model?
Model answer
The environment is everything around the performer during the activity. The environment includes the playing area, the crowd, teammates, opponents and the weather.
- 6
How does the display differ from the environment?
Model answer
The display is the part of the environment the performer can detect. The display contains both relevant and irrelevant cues.
