- 3 things to know
- Paper 1
Overview

What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Which school of psychology is insight learning associated with?
Why does insight learning favour teaching a skill as a whole?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is insight learning?
Model answer
Insight learning is a cognitive theory in which the learner solves a problem by understanding it as a whole. The solution comes from thinking rather than trial and error.
- 2
Which school of psychology is insight learning associated with?
Model answer
Insight learning comes from Gestalt psychology. The Gestalt theorists argued that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
- 3
Why does insight learning favour teaching a skill as a whole?
Model answer
Gestalt theory holds that a skill is learned best as a complete pattern. Whole practice lets the learner see how the parts fit together.
- 4
How does insight learning make use of past experience?
Model answer
The learner draws on knowledge stored in long-term memory to make sense of a new problem. Relevant past experience helps the solution appear quickly.
- 5
Give an example of insight learning in a team game.
Model answer
A coach asks a basketball team how to break down a zone defence. The players think through the problem and work out an attacking pattern themselves.
- 6
Why is insight learning motivating for performers?
Model answer
The learner solves the problem personally and understands why the solution works. Personal understanding makes the learning more permanent and more satisfying.
