Analysing a skill in phases
- 3 things to know
- Component 2
Overview
The preparation, execution and recovery phases in a tennis serve and a basketball set shot, finding strengths and weaknesses, observation checklists, viewing angles, video, comparison with elite performers and acting on weaknesses.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Describe the three phases of a basketball set shot.
What happens in the preparation phase of a tennis serve?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Name the three phases of a skill, and state what they lead to.
Model answer
A skill divides into the preparation, execution and recovery phases. Preparation sets up the action, execution is the main action and recovery follows through. Together the phases lead to the result or outcome.
- 2
What happens in the preparation phase of a tennis serve?
Model answer
The player takes a balanced stance and grip, tosses the ball and takes the racket into the backswing. The knees bend to store energy for the drive up to the ball.
- 3
What happens in the execution phase of a tennis serve?
Model answer
The legs drive upwards and the racket accelerates to strike the ball at full stretch. Contact is made above the head, slightly in front of the body.
- 4
What happens in the recovery phase of a tennis serve?
Model answer
The racket follows through across the body, and the player lands balanced inside the court. The player then returns to a ready position for the next shot.
- 5
Describe the three phases of a basketball set shot.
Model answer
The preparation phase is a balanced stance with knees bent and the ball above the shooting shoulder. The execution phase is the extension of the legs and arm, with a flick of the wrist. The recovery phase is the follow-through before a balanced landing.
- 6
Why is the recovery phase important?
Model answer
A full follow-through slows the limbs gradually, which protects joints and muscles. A quick return to a ready position prepares the performer for the next action.
