The slow component and recovery windows
- 3 things to know
- Component 1
Overview
The slow component, the Cori cycle and lactate removal, raised heart rate and breathing, the two-hour and 48-hour windows, rehydration and cooling, glycogen restoration, EIMD and DOMS, recovery between matches and rugby half-time.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
How long can the slow component last?
What happens to most of the lactate during recovery?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What does the slow component of recovery achieve?
Model answer
The slow component removes lactate and hydrogen ions and returns heart rate, breathing and temperature to resting levels. Glycogen replenishment also begins.
- 2
How long can the slow component last?
Model answer
The slow component can last from several minutes to several hours after intense exercise. Lactate is usually cleared within about an hour.
- 3
What happens to most of the lactate during recovery?
Model answer
Most lactate is converted back to pyruvate and oxidised in the mitochondria. The pyruvate enters the Krebs cycle and is broken down to carbon dioxide and water.
- 4
What is the Cori cycle?
Model answer
The Cori cycle carries lactate in the blood to the liver. The liver converts lactate into glucose and glycogen, which can be returned to the muscles.
- 5
Why is oxygen needed to remove lactate and hydrogen ions?
Model answer
Lactate and hydrogen ions are cleared by aerobic oxidation in the mitochondria. The hydrogen finally combines with oxygen in the electron transport chain to form water.
- 6
Why do heart rate and breathing stay raised after exercise?
Model answer
Raised heart rate and breathing deliver the extra oxygen needed for recovery. The oxygen is used to remove lactate, rebuild energy stores and cool the body.
