  1. 1

What do RICE and POLICE stand for?

    Model answer

RICE stands for rest, ice, compression and elevation. POLICE stands for protection, optimal loading, ice, compression and elevation.

  2. 2

What do ice, compression and elevation achieve after an acute soft tissue injury?

    Model answer

Ice causes vasoconstriction, which reduces bleeding, swelling and pain. Compression limits swelling, and elevation above the heart helps excess fluid drain away.

  3. 3

Describe what the protection stage of POLICE involves.

    Model answer

Protection means shielding the injured part from further damage in the first few days. Crutches, a brace or a sling may be used, but only for a short period.

  4. 4

Why has optimal loading replaced complete rest in current injury advice?

    Model answer

Prolonged rest weakens muscle, stiffens joints and slows the repair of tissue. Gradual, controlled loading stimulates healing and allows an earlier return to play.

  5. 5

Evaluate RICE as a treatment for an acute injury.

    Model answer

RICE is simple and cheap and can be started immediately by anyone. The long rest it recommends can cause stiffness and muscle wasting, which delays the return to play.

  6. 6

Explain how ultrasound therapy aids recovery from a soft tissue injury.

    Model answer

High-frequency sound waves pass into the tissue and produce deep heat and vibration. Blood flow to the area increases, which speeds repair and eases pain and swelling.
