Oxygen deficit, EPOC and the fast component
- 3 things to know
- Component 1
Overview
The oxygen deficit, EPOC and its two components, re-phosphorylation of phosphocreatine and its half-time, the basketball time-out and the tennis break, rest intervals in sprint training, and a worked EPOC calculation.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why does an oxygen deficit occur at the start of exercise?
What is EPOC?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is the oxygen deficit?
Model answer
The oxygen deficit is the shortfall between the oxygen needed at the start of exercise and the oxygen actually supplied. Anaerobic energy covers the shortfall.
- 2
Why does an oxygen deficit occur at the start of exercise?
Model answer
Heart rate, breathing and blood flow take time to increase. Oxygen delivery therefore lags behind the sudden rise in demand.
- 3
What is EPOC?
Model answer
EPOC, excess post-exercise oxygen consumption, is the oxygen consumed during recovery above the resting rate. The extra oxygen returns the body to its pre-exercise state.
- 4
Name the two components of EPOC.
Model answer
EPOC has a fast component and a slow component. The fast component is also called alactacid, and the slow component lactacid.
- 5
What happens during the fast component of recovery?
Model answer
The fast component restores ATP and phosphocreatine stores. Myoglobin is also resaturated with oxygen, and the process takes about two to three minutes.
- 6
What is re-phosphorylation?
Model answer
Re-phosphorylation is the rebuilding of ATP and phosphocreatine by adding phosphate back to ADP and creatine. The energy comes from aerobic respiration during recovery.
