Preventing sports injuries
- 3 things to know
- Component 1
Overview
Conditioning and neck strengthening, muscle balance between the quadriceps and hamstrings, landing and tackling technique, protective equipment, taping and bracing, managing risk and training load, adapted rules, officials, surfaces and footwear.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
How does conditioning help to prevent injury?
Why does a rugby club include neck strengthening in its conditioning programme?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
How does conditioning help to prevent injury?
Model answer
A conditioning programme builds the strength, flexibility and endurance that a sport demands. A well-conditioned body tolerates heavy loads and tires later, when injuries are more likely.
- 2
Why does a rugby club include neck strengthening in its conditioning programme?
Model answer
Strong neck muscles stabilise the head and cervical spine in scrums and tackles. The risk of neck injury from sudden jolts is reduced.
- 3
What is meant by muscle balance, and why does it matter for injury prevention?
Model answer
Muscle balance means opposing muscle groups are trained to suitable relative strengths. An imbalance lets a stronger agonist overpower its antagonist and strain the joint.
- 4
Explain how an imbalance between the quadriceps and the hamstrings can lead to injury.
Model answer
Quadriceps much stronger than the hamstrings leave the hamstrings unable to brake the lower leg. A hamstring strain or an anterior cruciate ligament tear becomes more likely.
- 5
Explain why good technique reduces the risk of injury.
Model answer
Correct technique spreads load safely through the joints and uses the right muscles for the job. Poor technique puts repeated or sudden stress on tissues that cannot withstand it.
- 6
How does landing technique protect the knee in netball?
Model answer
A player should land with the knees bent and aligned over the toes, so force is absorbed gradually. A knee allowed to buckle inwards strains the anterior cruciate ligament.
