Linear and Angular Motion
Angular motion and moment of inertia
- 3 things to know
- Component 1
Overview
Angular motion and eccentric force, the diver's take-off, the three axes of rotation, angular velocity and radians with a worked somersault, moment of inertia and its two factors, the sprinter's leg and the gymnast on the beam.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is angular motion?
What causes angular motion?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is angular motion?
Model answer
Angular motion is movement of a body or body part around a fixed point or axis. A gymnast's giant circle on the high bar is an example.
- 2
What causes angular motion?
Model answer
An eccentric force, applied outside the centre of mass, causes angular motion. The off-centre force creates a turning effect, called torque, about an axis.
- 3
How does a diver start to rotate at take-off?
Model answer
The diver leans so that the reaction force from the board passes outside the centre of mass. The eccentric force creates rotation about the transverse axis.
- 4
Name the three axes of rotation, with a sporting example of each.
Model answer
The longitudinal axis runs from head to toe, as in a pirouette. The transverse axis runs from side to side, as in a somersault. The sagittal axis runs from front to back, as in a cartwheel.
- 5
Define angular velocity and state its units.
Model answer
Angular velocity is the rate of rotation, the angle turned through per second. Angular velocity is measured in radians per second, rad/s.
- 6
How many radians are there in one full rotation?
Model answer
One full rotation is 2π radians, about 6.28 rad. A full rotation is also 360°.
