Fitness Testing
Gas analysis and aerobic field tests
- 3 things to know
- Component 1
Overview
Gas analysis and the signs of a true VO₂ max, the multi-stage fitness test, the yo-yo intermittent recovery test, the Cooper 12-minute run and the Harvard step test with worked scores, maximal and submaximal tests, and validity and reliability.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
How do maximal and submaximal tests differ, and what makes a fitness test valid and reliable?
How does gas analysis measure VO₂ max directly?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
How does gas analysis measure VO₂ max directly?
Model answer
The performer exercises on a treadmill or cycle ergometer at increasing intensity until exhaustion. A mask collects expired air, and analysers measure the oxygen consumed and carbon dioxide produced.
- 2
What shows that a true VO₂ max has been reached in a gas analysis test?
Model answer
Oxygen uptake levels off even though the workload keeps rising. A high RER, near-maximal heart rate and high blood lactate confirm a maximal effort.
- 3
Evaluate gas analysis as a test of aerobic capacity.
Model answer
Gas analysis is the most valid and accurate measure of VO₂ max. The test needs expensive equipment and trained staff, and the maximal effort is exhausting.
- 4
Describe the multi-stage fitness test.
Model answer
The performer runs 20 m shuttles in time with bleeps that get faster at each level. The test ends when the performer can no longer reach the line in time, and the level predicts VO₂ max.
- 5
Give one strength and one weakness of the multi-stage fitness test.
Model answer
The test is cheap and can assess a large group at once. The score is only a prediction and depends on motivation and turning ability.
- 6
How does the yo-yo intermittent recovery test differ from the multi-stage fitness test?
Model answer
The yo-yo test adds a 10-second active recovery after each pair of 20 m shuttles. The test therefore mimics the stop-start demands of team games.

Every question in Fitness Testing, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
