Linear and Angular Motion

Distance, displacement, speed and acceleration

  • 3 things to know
  • Component 1

Overview

Linear motion, distance and displacement, scalars and vectors, speed, average speed and velocity, worked calculations for a 400 m lap, Usain Bolt's 9.58 s, a hockey player and a marathon, and acceleration and deceleration.

Explain the difference between distance and displacement.

Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    Define linear motion.

    Model answer

Linear motion is movement of a body in a straight or curved line. All parts of the body move the same distance, in the same direction, in the same time.

  2. 2

What kind of force produces linear motion?

    Model answer

A direct force, applied through the centre of mass, produces linear motion. A skeleton rider sliding down the ice track shows linear motion.

  3. 3

Explain the difference between distance and displacement.

    Model answer

Distance is the total length of the path travelled, with no direction. Displacement is the shortest straight-line distance from start to finish, in a stated direction.

  4. 4

What is the difference between a scalar and a vector quantity?

    Model answer

A scalar quantity has size only, such as distance and speed. A vector quantity has size and direction, such as displacement, velocity and acceleration.

  5. 5

A 400 m runner completes one lap of a standard track in 50 s. Calculate the average speed and the average velocity.

    Model answer

    The average speed is 8 m/s, but the average velocity is 0 m/s. Speed = 400 m ÷ 50 s = 8 m/s, while the displacement over a full lap is zero.

  6. 6

How is speed defined, and how is it calculated?

    Model answer

Speed is the rate of change of distance, measured in m/s. Speed = distance ÷ time.
