Overuse injuries: shin splints, tendonitis and stress fractures
- 3 things to know
- Component 1
Overview
Why overuse injuries develop, strains and hamstring strains, shin splints, tendonitis, tennis elbow and golfer's elbow, stress fractures and who is at risk, telling shin splints from a stress fracture, and treatment.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is a strain?
Why can a strain be classed as an overuse injury as well as a sudden one?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Why do overuse injuries develop?
Model answer
Repeated loading causes small areas of damage faster than the tissue can repair them. Too much training, too little recovery and poor technique all add to the risk.
- 2
What is a strain?
Model answer
A strain is a stretch or tear of muscle fibres, or of the tendon joining a muscle to bone. The hamstrings, calf and groin are common sites in sport.
- 3
Why can a strain be classed as an overuse injury as well as a sudden one?
Model answer
A strain often follows repeated overloading of a tired or tight muscle. Small tears build up until the muscle gives way during a sprint or a stretch.
- 4
Why are hamstring strains common in sprinters and footballers?
Model answer
The hamstrings work eccentrically to slow the lower leg at the end of each stride. Fatigue, tightness or hamstrings that are weak relative to the quadriceps make a tear more likely.
- 5
How long might a performer be out with a hamstring strain?
Model answer
A mild strain may heal within two or three weeks. A severe tear can take several months, and a complete rupture may need surgery.
- 6
What are shin splints?
Model answer
Shin splints, or periostitis, is inflammation of the periosteum, the membrane covering the tibia. The pain runs along the inner edge of the shin and worsens with exercise.
