The Cardiovascular System

Heart structure and the conduction system

  • 3 things to know
  • Component 1

Overview

The four chambers, the thicker left ventricle, the septum, tricuspid, bicuspid and semilunar valves, the myocardium and major vessels, the SA node, AV node, bundle of His and Purkinje fibres, and the cardiac cycle.

Key term

What do the atria and ventricles each do, and why are the two ventricle walls different?

Key term

Name the four chambers of the heart.

Key term

How do the jobs of the atria and the ventricles differ?

Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Name the four chambers of the heart.

    Model answer

The heart has a right atrium, a left atrium, a right ventricle and a left ventricle.

  2. 2

How do the jobs of the atria and the ventricles differ?

    Model answer

The atria receive blood returning to the heart and pass it to the ventricles. The ventricles pump blood out of the heart to the lungs and the body.

  3. 3

Why is the wall of the left ventricle thicker than that of the right?

    Model answer

The left ventricle pumps blood around the whole body at high pressure. The right ventricle only pumps blood the short distance to the lungs.

  4. 4

Describe the septum and its function.

    Model answer

The septum is the muscular wall dividing the left side of the heart from the right. The septum keeps oxygenated and deoxygenated blood apart.

  5. 5

Where are the tricuspid and bicuspid valves, and what do they do?

    Model answer

The tricuspid valve lies between the right atrium and ventricle, and the bicuspid valve between the left atrium and ventricle. The valves stop blood flowing back into the atria.

  6. 6

Where are the semilunar valves, and what do they do?

    Model answer

The semilunar valves guard the exits into the aorta and the pulmonary artery. The valves stop blood flowing back into the ventricles.

AThe training zone is 136 to 158 bpm.
BHeart rate reserve = (220 − 40) − 70 = 110 bpm.
CLower limit = (110 × 0.6) + 70 = 136 bpm.
