Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

What does the acronym SMARTER stand for in goal setting?

    Model answer

SMARTER stands for specific, measurable, achievable and realistic. The last three letters are time-bound, evaluated and recorded.

  2. 2

Why should a goal be specific?

    Model answer

A specific goal tells the performer exactly what to improve. A target to raise first-serve percentage is more useful than a target to play better.

  3. 3

Why should a goal be measurable?

    Model answer

A measurable goal can be checked against data such as times or statistics. Progress becomes visible, which motivates the performer.

  4. 4

Give an example of a measurable goal for a netball shooter.

    Model answer

A measurable goal is to raise shooting accuracy from 65% to 75% over the next six matches. Match statistics show whether the target is met.

  5. 5

    What makes a goal achievable?

    Model answer

An achievable goal is within reach with effort in the time allowed. A goal that is too hard causes frustration and loss of motivation.

  6. 6

How does a realistic goal differ from an achievable one?

    Model answer

An achievable goal is possible in principle for the performer. A realistic goal also takes account of circumstances such as time, facilities and injury.
