Thorndike's laws of learning
- 3 things to know
- Component 2
Overview
Thorndike and his puzzle-box cats, the laws of effect, exercise and readiness and how a coach applies each, practice making permanent, teaching before a learner is ready, the basketball free throw and an evaluation of the laws.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
How did Thorndike explain learning?
What did Thorndike's puzzle-box experiments with cats show?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
How did Thorndike explain learning?
Model answer
Thorndike saw learning as the strengthening of connections between a stimulus and a response. Thorndike's three laws describe how the connections are strengthened.
- 2
What did Thorndike's puzzle-box experiments with cats show?
Model answer
Cats shut in a box learned by trial and error to work a catch and escape to food. The successful response came more quickly with each trial as the bond strengthened.
- 3
State Thorndike's law of effect.
Model answer
A response followed by a satisfying outcome is strengthened and more likely to be repeated. A response followed by an unpleasant outcome is weakened.
- 4
How does a coach apply the law of effect?
Model answer
The coach praises a gymnast straight after a well-controlled landing. The satisfaction strengthens the bond, so the gymnast is more likely to land that way again.
- 5
How does the law of effect explain why punishment can reduce an error?
Model answer
An unpleasant outcome after an error weakens the bond between the situation and that response. A player benched for a reckless tackle is less likely to repeat it.
- 6
State Thorndike's law of exercise.
Model answer
The more often a stimulus and response are linked through practice, the stronger the bond becomes. A bond that is not used weakens.
