Overview

The Wingate test and its fatigue index, MAOD, the running-based anaerobic sprint test with a worked power, the Cunningham and Faulkner test, the vertical jump and the Margaria-Kalamen power test.

How is MAOD measured?

What three measures does the Wingate test produce?

Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    Describe the Wingate test.

    Model answer

The performer pedals flat out for 30 seconds on a cycle ergometer against a resistance of about 7.5% of body mass. Power output is recorded every five seconds.

  2. 2

What three measures does the Wingate test produce?

    Model answer

The Wingate test gives peak power, mean power and a fatigue index. Peak power comes in the first few seconds, and mean power reflects anaerobic capacity.

  3. 3

In a Wingate test, a cyclist's peak power is 900 W and minimum power is 540 W. What is the fatigue index?

    Model answer

    The fatigue index is 40%. Fatigue index = (900 − 540) ÷ 900 × 100 = 40%.

  4. 4

    Evaluate the Wingate test.

    Model answer

The Wingate test is a valid and reliable laboratory measure of anaerobic power and capacity. The test needs a specialist ergometer, and cycling results transfer poorly to running sports.

  5. 5

What is the maximal accumulated oxygen deficit (MAOD)?

    Model answer

MAOD is the largest oxygen deficit a performer can build up during exhausting, supramaximal exercise. MAOD is widely used as a measure of anaerobic capacity.

  6. 6

    How is MAOD measured?

    Model answer

Submaximal tests first establish the oxygen cost at several intensities. The performer then works to exhaustion at a supramaximal intensity. MAOD is the predicted oxygen demand minus the oxygen actually consumed.

CLower limit = (110 × 0.6) + 70 = 136 bpm.
