Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is motivation?
Model answer
Motivation is the internal and external forces that arouse and direct behaviour towards a goal. Motivation affects both the direction and the intensity of effort.
- 2
What is intrinsic motivation?
Model answer
Intrinsic motivation is the drive from within to take part for its own sake. Enjoyment, satisfaction and pride drive the performer.
- 3
What is extrinsic motivation?
Model answer
Extrinsic motivation comes from outside the performer. Rewards such as trophies, money and praise drive the behaviour.
- 4
Why is intrinsic motivation usually longer lasting?
Model answer
Intrinsic motivation does not depend on rewards that may stop. A performer who loves the activity keeps going when nobody is watching.
- 5
How can overuse of extrinsic rewards reduce intrinsic motivation?
Model answer
The performer starts to take part for the reward rather than for enjoyment. When the rewards stop, participation may stop too.
- 6
What is positive motivation?
Model answer
Positive motivation encourages behaviour through the promise of a pleasant outcome. Praise, rewards and success drive the performer.
