Components and Principles of Training
Measuring intensity, Karvonen and monitoring technology
- 3 things to know
- Component 1
Overview
Percentage of 1RM, the Borg RPE scale, percentages of functional threshold, Karvonen's formula with worked target zones, work to rest ratios for each energy system, GPS trackers, power meters, lactate analysers and heart rate variability.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
How is percentage of one repetition maximum (%1RM) used to set strength training?
An athlete's 1RM bench press is 90 kg. What load is 80% of 1RM?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
How is percentage of one repetition maximum (%1RM) used to set strength training?
Model answer
Loads are prescribed as a percentage of the performer's one repetition maximum. Maximal strength work uses heavy loads of about 85% 1RM or more for few repetitions.
- 2
An athlete's 1RM bench press is 90 kg. What load is 80% of 1RM?
Model answer
The load is 72 kg. Load = 0.80 × 90 kg = 72 kg.
- 3
What is the Borg Rating of Perceived Exertion (RPE) scale?
Model answer
The Borg RPE scale is a subjective rating of how hard exercise feels, from 6 (no exertion) to 20 (maximal). A rating multiplied by 10 roughly predicts heart rate.
- 4
Give one strength and one limitation of using RPE to measure intensity.
Model answer
RPE is free and quick and needs no equipment. RPE is subjective and can be affected by mood, motivation and experience.
- 5
How is a percentage of functional threshold used to set intensity?
Model answer
Training zones are set as percentages of FTP or threshold pace. A cyclist might ride endurance sessions at about 56–75% of FTP and intervals above 100%.
- 6
A cyclist's FTP is 250 W. What power corresponds to 90% of FTP?
Model answer
The target power is 225 W. Target power = 0.90 × 250 W = 225 W.
