Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is speed as a component of fitness?
Model answer
Speed is the ability to move the whole body or a body part quickly. Speed is measured in metres per second.
- 2
Why is speed important to performers other than sprinters?
Model answer
Limb speed matters in a boxer's jab, a tennis serve or a bowler's arm action. Games players also need speed to reach space or a loose ball first.
- 3
What is agility?
Model answer
Agility is the ability to change direction quickly while keeping balance and control. A rugby winger sidestepping a defender shows agility.
- 4
Which other fitness components does agility depend on?
Model answer
Agility depends on speed, balance, coordination, power and reaction time. Reactive agility also relies on quick decision-making.
- 5
Why does a goalkeeper facing a penalty need a fast reaction time?
Model answer
The ball reaches the goal in well under a second. The keeper must start moving the instant the ball is struck, or anticipate its direction.
- 6
How does reaction time differ from speed as a component of fitness?
Model answer
Reaction time is how quickly a performer starts a response to a stimulus. Speed is how quickly the movement itself is carried out once started.
