Reinforcement, punishment and the S-R bond
- 3 things to know
- Component 2
Overview
Reinforcement and the S-R bond, positive and negative reinforcement, punishment and how it differs, timing, the novice, when punishment is justified, reducing reinforcement, the golf swing fault and a bond that fades.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is reinforcement?
What is the S-R bond?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is reinforcement?
Model answer
Reinforcement is any process that makes a response more likely to be repeated. Reinforcement strengthens the S-R bond.
- 2
What is the S-R bond?
Model answer
The S-R bond is the learned link between a stimulus and the response a performer makes to it. A strong bond means the response to that cue becomes automatic.
- 3
Define positive reinforcement.
Model answer
Positive reinforcement adds a pleasant stimulus after a correct response, such as praise, a trophy or a place in the team. The correct response becomes more likely to be repeated.
- 4
Define negative reinforcement.
Model answer
Negative reinforcement removes an unpleasant stimulus when the correct response is produced. A coach stops criticising a player once the player tracks back to defend.
- 5
Define punishment in the context of learning.
Model answer
Punishment gives an unpleasant consequence after an incorrect response to stop it being repeated. A player dropped, fined or sent to the sin bin is being punished.
- 6
How do negative reinforcement and punishment differ?
Model answer
Negative reinforcement strengthens a correct response by taking away something unpleasant. Punishment weakens an incorrect response by imposing something unpleasant.
