Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Why are skills classified on continuums rather than into fixed categories?

    Model answer

Most skills show features of both ends of a classification, depending on the situation. A continuum lets a skill be placed nearer one end, with the placement justified.

  2. 2

    Define a gross skill.

    Model answer

A gross skill uses large muscle groups to produce powerful whole-body movements with little precision. A shot put or a rugby tackle is a gross skill.

  3. 3

    Define a fine skill.

    Model answer

A fine skill uses small muscle groups for precise, delicate movements, often with high hand–eye coordination. A snooker shot or a dart throw is a fine skill.

  4. 4

What is the difference between internally and externally paced skills?

    Model answer

An internally paced skill is started and timed by the performer, such as a golf drive. An externally paced skill has its timing set by outside factors, such as receiving a serve in tennis.

  5. 5

    What is a discrete skill?

    Model answer

A discrete skill has a clear beginning and end and can be repeated on its own. A penalty kick is a discrete skill.

  6. 6

    What is a serial skill?

    Model answer

A serial skill links several discrete elements in a set order. A triple jump, with its hop, step and jump, is a serial skill.
