- 3 things to know
- Component 2

What is social loafing?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is social loafing?
Model answer
Social loafing is the reduction in individual effort when a person works in a group. The loafer hides behind teammates' efforts.
- 2
What did Latané find about effort in groups?
Model answer
Latané found that people clapped and shouted less loudly per person as the group grew. Individual effort fell when contributions could not be identified.
- 3
Give three causes of social loafing.
Model answer
The player's contribution cannot be identified. The player lacks confidence or has low self-efficacy. The player believes teammates are not trying either.
- 4
Why does a lack of identifiability cause social loafing?
Model answer
A player whose effort cannot be seen expects no praise or blame. Effort falls because it makes no visible difference to the player.
- 5
How can a coach's leadership contribute to social loafing?
Model answer
A coach who gives no individual feedback or roles lets players hide. Players feel their effort is not valued.
- 6
How can low task importance contribute to social loafing?
Model answer
A player who sees a match or drill as unimportant puts in little effort. A friendly match may see more loafing than a cup final.
