Strength, agility and sprint tests
- 3 things to know
- Component 1
Overview
The one repetition maximum and handgrip dynamometer, the Illinois agility run and T-test, timing sprints, standing and flying 30 m sprints, stride length and frequency, interpreting and presenting scores, and a worked 1RM improvement.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why might a coach use a handgrip dynamometer rather than a 1RM test?
What are the safety concerns of 1RM testing?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a one repetition maximum (1RM) test?
Model answer
A 1RM test finds the heaviest load a performer can lift once with correct technique. The load is raised gradually after a warm-up until a lift fails.
- 2
Why might a coach use a handgrip dynamometer rather than a 1RM test?
Model answer
A handgrip dynamometer is quick, cheap and safe for any performer. The test measures only grip strength, so it is less valid for leg-dominant sports.
- 3
What are the safety concerns of 1RM testing?
Model answer
Maximal lifts carry a risk of injury, especially with poor technique or no spotter. A novice can instead be given a predicted 1RM from several submaximal repetitions.
- 4
Describe the Illinois agility run.
Model answer
The performer starts lying face down and sprints a 10 m by 5 m course, weaving through four central cones. The time to complete the course measures agility.
- 5
What is a limitation of pre-planned agility tests such as the Illinois run?
Model answer
A pre-planned course measures change-of-direction speed rather than reactive agility. Games demand responses to unpredictable opponents and ball movement.
- 6
Why is the T-test suited to a netball or basketball player?
Model answer
The T-test combines forward sprinting, sideways shuffling and backpedalling. The movement pattern mirrors court sports such as netball and basketball.
