Reaction time, Hick's law and the psychological refractory period
- 3 things to know
- Component 2
Overview
Reaction and response time, simple and choice reaction time, Hick's law and its graph, worked Hick's law, penalty save and ruler drop figures, measuring reactions and sprint starts, and the psychological refractory period in a rugby dummy.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Define response time.
What is simple reaction time?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define reaction time.
Model answer
Reaction time is the time from the onset of a stimulus to the start of the response. The body has not yet begun to move.
- 2
Define response time.
Model answer
Response time is reaction time plus movement time. Response time runs from the stimulus to the end of the movement.
- 3
What is simple reaction time?
Model answer
Simple reaction time is reacting to one stimulus with one set response. A sprinter reacting to the starting gun is an example.
- 4
What is choice reaction time?
Model answer
Choice reaction time is reacting when there are several possible stimuli, each with its own response. A goalkeeper facing a penalty must pick a direction.
- 5
State Hick's law.
Model answer
Hick's law states that choice reaction time rises as the number of stimulus–response choices increases. The rise is in proportion to the logarithm of the number of choices.
- 6
Describe the shape of a graph of choice reaction time against the number of choices.
Model answer
Choice reaction time rises steeply from one choice to two. The curve then flattens as more choices are added.
