The Neuromuscular System
Neuromuscular transmission and the response to warming up
- 3 things to know
- Component 1
Overview
The central nervous system, the motor neurone and myelin sheath, the neuromuscular junction and motor end plate, acetylcholine and acetylcholinesterase, action potentials, and how a warm-up speeds impulses, reactions and recruitment.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is a motor neurone?
Describe the structure of a motor neurone.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What makes up the central nervous system, and what is its role in movement?
Model answer
The central nervous system is the brain and the spinal cord. The CNS processes information and sends impulses to the muscles through motor neurones.
- 2
What is a motor neurone?
Model answer
A motor neurone is a nerve cell that carries impulses from the central nervous system to muscle fibres.
- 3
Describe the structure of a motor neurone.
Model answer
A motor neurone has a cell body with dendrites and a long axon. The axon is wrapped in a myelin sheath and ends in branches at the muscle fibres.
- 4
What is the function of the myelin sheath?
Model answer
The myelin sheath insulates the axon. Impulses jump between the gaps in the sheath, called nodes of Ranvier, which speeds up transmission.
- 5
What is the neuromuscular junction, and what is the motor end plate?
Model answer
The neuromuscular junction is where a motor neurone meets a muscle fibre. The motor end plate is the specialised region of the fibre's membrane at the junction.
- 6
Describe how an impulse is passed from a motor neurone to a muscle fibre.
Model answer
The impulse reaches the axon terminal and acetylcholine is released into the synaptic cleft. Acetylcholine binds to receptors on the motor end plate and depolarises the muscle membrane.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in The Neuromuscular System, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
