- 1
How does a physiotherapist support an adult service user to regain independence after a fall?
Model answer
The physiotherapist assesses strength, balance and confidence, then works through a programme of exercise to rebuild them. They advise on walking aids and teach the person how to get up safely. Reducing the fear of falling again is as much a part of the work as the physical recovery.
- 2
Give an example of a physiotherapist's work with an older person after a fall.
Model answer
After a fall a physiotherapist assesses balance, strength and walking and then prescribes exercises and a walking aid to cut the risk of another fall.
- 3
How does a speech and language therapist support an adult after a stroke?
Model answer
The therapist assesses whether the person can produce and understand language and whether they can swallow safely. Treatment may involve exercises to recover speech, alternative means of communicating, and advice on the textures of food and drink. The swallowing work matters because unsafe swallowing leads to choking and chest infection.
- 4
Why might a speech and language therapist be involved after a stroke?
Model answer
A stroke can leave a person unable to find words or to swallow safely, and a speech and language therapist works on both of those.
- 5
What is the role of an occupational therapist?
Model answer
An occupational therapist helps people carry out the everyday activities that matter to them, by building skills, changing the task or adapting the surroundings.
- 6
Which practitioner assesses whether a person can prepare a meal safely at home?
Model answer
An occupational therapist assesses whether a person can prepare a meal safely at home and what would make it possible.
